- LETTERS, Page 8Testing for Drugs

- I am surprised that federal employees object to drug testing
- for critical jobs (LAW, April 3). In my 18 months in the Navy, I
- have had my room searched by drug-sniffing dogs, undergone three
- random urinalyses and provided four blood samples. Since my
- colleagues and I work with nuclear reactors and multimillion-dollar
- aircraft and are responsible for the safety of other service
- members and the security of our country, I do not object.

- The use of drug testing to determine the suitability of an
- applicant for a job or an employee for a promotion is disturbing.
- As a chemist, I know that these tests are not infallible. People
- want an easy true-false method to replace a complex decision. But
- to violate civil rights under this illusion is not only morally
- lazy but also an egregious misuse of technology.
